The International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) is proud to annouce the launch of a new guide to the care of wool carpets. Available to download, the Wool Carpet Care and Maintenance Guide has been developed to address misconceptions that wool carpets are difficult to clean and maintain.
The document delivers up to date information and advice on the safe, sustainable care of wool carpets, to maximise their long-term use in a responsible way.
The guide has been compiled by a group of the world’s leading industry experts, working in consultation with WoolSafe, an organisation that is dedicated to advanced research into the care of wool products.
“The fact that wool has been used to carpet homes for so long is testament to how effective it is for that application.”
Humans have been using wool to carpet their homes since around 2,000 BCE, attracted by the natural material’s insulative, comfortable and durable properties. Wool also has other characteristics that make it ideal for carpets. Wool’s high nitrogen and water content make it flame retardant and it is easy to clean due to its protective membrane that repels dirt and stains.
Wool is also one of the most sustainable and circular materials available on the planet. It is 100% biodegradable in soil and water, and when managed properly, is an exemplar of regenerative farming. As with any material, wool carpets need to be cared for in the right way to maximise their useful lives, and to allow for a minimum impact on the environment.
Wool carpet care is generally misunderstood
The IWTO’s Wool Interiors Working Group, formed to promote the use of strong wool in rugs and carpeting, surveyed a number of retailers, interior designers and other wool value chain stakeholders last year. The survey revealed a high level of misunderstanding in the market about the care required for wool carpets.
As the misconception that wool carpets are difficult to take care of impacts purchasing behaviour, the IWTO collaborated with WoolSafe to develop the new comprehensive Wool Carpet Care Guide, which is now available to read and download.
Introducing the IWTO Wool Carpet Care Guide
The IWTO Wool Carpet Care Guide covers all of the key aspects involved in the care and maintenance of wool carpets, including preventative and routine maintenance; restorative cleaning; different aspects of soiling; and key methods for cleaning and the required products for doing that work.
The guide incorporates an easy-to-follow spot and stain removal guide, combined with a treatment plan for each type of mark.
Carol Sebert of IWTO comments: “The fact that wool has been used to carpet homes for so long is testament to how effective it is for that application. Our survey identified a need to improve understanding about wool carpet care, and boost confidence that wool rugs and carpets are as good a choice now as they have always been.
“The IWTO Wool Carpet Care Guide is a free resource to help businesses in the industry provide sound advice to consumers. It can also be easily used by members of the public.
“Our team has worked closely with WoolSafe to compile and showcase the very latest information that will help people to look after their wool carpets in a responsible way, and ensure that they continue to perform and look great for many years.”
