Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) recently introduced the latest among its modern wool products. Blending luxuriously soft wool with brown seaweed, the company has again asserted the versatility and superior performance of wool. The International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) is very excited about this new developments. Here’s what you need to know.
Pushing the Boundaries of Wool Technology
AWI has called the new product Wool Alginate Fibre Blend. CEO John Roberts says it is the result of the company’s ongoing commitment to product innovation, which itself is an important part of AWI’s commitment to wool growers.
“At AWI, we want wool in as many different products as possible, so we work at pushing the boundaries of wool technology. These new developments not only highlight the incredible versatility and performance of wool but also underscore our dedication to sustainability and innovation. We believe these advancements will set new standards in the textile industry and open up exciting opportunities for designers and manufacturers worldwide.”
An Impressive New Natural Fibre
Wool and brown seaweed come together in Wool Alginate Fibre Blend, combining the capabilities and natural advantages of the two fibres. The yarn offers a circular solution for a variety of uses, including:
- Performance apparel
- Medical textiles
- Workwear
- Home textiles
AWI collaborated with IMPETUS Portugal Têxteis and Südwolle Group to develop this unique new fibre, which offers comfort as well as seamless adaptation to indoor and outdoor environments. It combines wool’s natural softness with brown seaweed’s skin comfort and moisture retention.

More Wool Innovations from AWI
AWI also launched its wool denim, which blends the timeless appeal of denim with the natural benefits of wool. The result is denim that is more comfortable, breathable, durable and adaptable than its traditional cotton equivalent. This new fabric can be used in the production of entire new wardrobes, including shirts, suits, denim-inspired knits and more.
Another new offering by AWI is its new performance capsule collection, developed in collaboration with Shima Sheiki Italia, H-Dry Technology and Macpi Group. It allows for the creation of garments with minimal seams, which reduces wastage and makes clothing more comfortable. The collection is designed for mountain and snow sports.
One more exciting wool innovation: a collection of functional fabrics that combines lightweight construction with exceptional softness. This versatile fibre is called Lightweight Performance Wool, ideal for sports and outdoor adventures.
“Innovation is at the heart of what we do at AWI. By continuously exploring new applications and technologies for wool, we help create products that meet the evolving demands of consumers who prioritise sustainable and natural fibres. This not only helps us tap into new markets but also reinforces wool’s position as a premium, eco-friendly material.”
