Humans have been using wool to carpet their homes since around 2,000 BCE, attracted by the natural material’s insulative, comfortable and durable properties. Wool has many characteristics that make it ideal for carpets. Wool’s high nitrogen and water content make it flame retardant. It is easy to clean wool carpets due to the fibre’s protective membrane that repels dirt and stains.

Wool is also one of the most sustainable and circular materials available on the planet. It is 100% biodegradable in soil and water, and when managed properly, is an exemplar of regenerative farming. As with any material, wool carpets need to be cared for in the right way to maximise their useful lives, and to allow for a minimum impact on the environment.

IWTO’s Wool Carpet Care Guide was developed with industry experts WoolSafe, to cover the key aspects involved in the care and maintenance of wool carpets, including

  • Preventative and routine maintenance
  • Restorative cleaning; different aspects of soiling
  • Key methods for cleaning and the required products

The Guide incorporates an easy-to-follow spot and stain removal chart, combined with a treatment plan for each type of mark. If you want only the spot and stain removal chart, download the short version.
