Wool and Cycling GearWhen most people think of cycling gear, wool is probably not the first fibre that comes to mind, but thanks to Suedwolle Group, a German producer of worsted yarn in pure wool and wool blends for weaving, circular, flat knitting and technical applications, this is likely to change. International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO) is very excited about a new project that the group recently initiated, called the Suedwolle Innovation Hub.

The Suedwolle Innovation Hub Story

Announced in May 2024, the Innovation Hub is specifically directed towards creating cycling apparel that will redefine standards for the sport. The project stands as a testament to the versatility of wool as a functional fibre in sports applications, debunking any myths that may still remain regarding the ability of natural fibres to work well in high-performance settings.

The project has kicked off with two products: the windbreaker and the BB pants. The designers took a minimalist approach, focusing on performance without compromising style. The collection is designed to function as a second skin, offering protection against the elements, while providing breathability and  moisture control. Production methods incorporate advanced warp knitting techniques, and integrate Betaspun® yarn with Pagastic filament. The wool and the filament combine to ensure durability and sustainability.

The windbreaker is made from a blend of 79% wool 16.2 µ TEC, 21% polyamide filament. The Hermosillo Betaspun® yarn offers increased tensile strength for better wear resistance, improved elasticity for enhanced comfort and fit, and high thermal regulation to help regulate body temperature.

The BB pants are made from 84% wool 16.2 µ TEC, 11% polyamide filament and 5% Elastan. They provide enhanced flexibility for improved movement and comfort, superior resilience and optimal thermal insulation.

The Suedwolle Innovation Hub project proves that it is possible to merge sustainable, natural fibres with high-tech solutions to create garments that meet the needs of professional cyclists, while ensuring sustainability. A spokesperson for the Suedwolle Group stated: “The best part of the project was exploring for the first time a new field and the feeling of having discovered a new potential able to inspire others and change the rules of the game.”
