5 Surprising Places You’ll Find Wool in 2026
When you think of wool, a cosy sweater or plush carpet probably comes to mind.
But this remarkable natural fibre has found its way into some of the world’s most unexpected—and high-tech—environments.
Here are five places where wool is quietly making a difference in 2026.
1. In Outer Space
Wool’s journey has literally reached new heights. In a 2015 study, textile engineers at NASA singled out Merino wool shirts as the most promising base layer in tests involving crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
When NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts needed clothing that could handle months in space without laundry facilities, they turned to superfine Merino wool.
“We chose wool for exercise because it has really interesting properties in drying and actually after it gets dry, it doesn’t smell,” explained NASA’s resident textile engineer Evelyne Orndorff.
The NASA engineers discovered what sheep have known for millennia: wool’s natural flame resistance (up to 600°C), anti-static properties, low-lint characteristics, and odour resistance make it ideal for extreme environments.
2. In High-Performance Vehicles
Luxury electric vehicles in 2026 are increasingly turning to wool for their interiors. Wool is naturally flame-retardant,requiring temperatures of 570-600°C to ignite, far higher than cotton at 255°C or polyester at 252-292°C. It is also breathable, moisture-wicking, and naturally anti-static.
These technical properties are earning wool a place in premium automotive design, where safety meets sustainability in cutting-edge electric mobility.
3. In Your Skincare Routine
Lanolin, the natural wax extracted during wool scouring, remains the gold standard for medical-grade barrier creams and cosmetics. This “wool wax” is a highly desirable ingredient that protects and moisturises skin.
Finding its way into premium skincare products, lanolin is a perfect example of how even the by-products of wool production find premium applications.
4. On the Soundstage
Professional recording studios and cinemas have long understood what wool can do for acoustics. Wool’s complex structure makes it exceptional for sound dampening and vibration control, creating the perfect acoustic environment for capturing or experiencing audio.
From concert halls to home theatres, wool insulation helps eliminate unwanted noise while maintaining superior sound quality. This is a testament to the fibre’s sophisticated engineering at the microscopic level.
5. Feeding Your Garden
Here’s one of wool’s most surprising applications: as a premium organic fertiliser.
When wool biodegrades in compost, it slowly releases valuable nutrients—sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—that enrich soil. Tests show that wool can biodegrade in soil in as little as three to four months, with complete degradation after six months in ideal conditions.
Gardeners are discovering that wool waste works as an effective slow-release fertiliser, breaking down over months to condition soil and nourish plants. It’s the circular economy in action: from pasture to garment and back to the earth.
