IWTO discuss lightweight merino wool - body imageWool has long been valued for warmth, comfort and versatility. New developments in yarn and textile technology continue to expand where and how this natural fibre can be used.

Südwolle Group’s latest Südwebs Innovation Hub story, Zen-phyr, explores wool’s potential by challenging the traditional association between wool and winter clothing. Developed in collaboration with Chinese designer Feifei Teng, the project combines ultrafine Merino wool, advanced yarn engineering and contemporary design. The result is lightweight garments centred on softness, breathability and movement.

The insights from Zen-phyr have helped shape Südwolle Group’s Spring/Summer 2028 Solar Drift weaving collection. Solar Drift embodies how experimentation with wool can translate into new commercial yarn possibilities.

A Lighter Approach to Merino Wool

The name Zen-phyr brings together “zen”, representing calm and balance, and “zephyr”, meaning a gentle breeze. Together, they capture the ambition behind the capsule collection: creating wool garments that feel light, fluid and effortless.

Drawing inspiration from Eastern aesthetics and contemporary loungewear, the collection incorporates relaxed silhouettes and a soft visual language. To demonstrate how Merino wool can offer natural comfort beyond cold-weather applications, both knitted and woven styles were developed.

Several key aspects of the project highlight the evolving possibilities for wool:

1. Challenging Seasonal Perceptions of Wool

Zen-phyr explores how ultrafine Merino wool can be incorporated into lightweight garments designed for everyday wear. Rather than approaching wool primarily as a fibre for insulation and winter clothing, the project focuses on characteristics such as breathability, softness and wearer comfort.

This helps demonstrate the potential for wool to play a broader role in transitional and warm-weather wardrobes.

2. Combining Design and Yarn Engineering

The project brought together textile engineering and the creative direction of designer Feifei Teng.

Eastern design influences helped shape the collection’s relaxed forms. The technical requirements of lightweight garments influenced yarn selection and construction. This combination allowed the project to explore not only how the garments perform, but also how lightweight wool can look and feel in contemporary fashion.

3. Inspiring the Solar Drift Collection

The development process behind Zen-phyr directly informed Südwolle Group’s Spring/Summer 2028 Solar Drift weaving collection.

The collection introduces three new yarn qualities based on Betaspun® technology. This construction wraps a Merino wool core with a polyamide filament, natural yarn or bio-based alternative. In this way, wool’s natural comfort is maintained, alongside the stability required for weaving.

4. Exploring Three New Yarn Qualities

The Solar Drift collection introduces Sempione Betaspun®, Sansho Betaspun® and Pasha Betaspun®, each offering different characteristics.

Sempione Betaspun®, which was used in Zen-phyr’s woven garments, combines a Merino wool core with cotton. Sansho Betaspun® incorporates cupro to provide softness and fluidity, while Pasha Betaspun® uses polyamide to offer greater structure and stability.

Together, these yarns demonstrate how different fibre combinations and advanced spinning technologies can broaden the performance and aesthetic possibilities of Merino wool.

Wool Innovation for Spring/Summer 2028

Projects such as Zen-phyr demonstrate the continuing evolution of wool through collaboration between fibre expertise, yarn engineering and fashion design.

By exploring lighter constructions and new fibre combinations, Südwolle Group challenges old perceptions of when wool can be worn, and shows how creative development can lead to commercially relevant textile innovation.
