Some things to remember about wool when discussions turn to textile sustainability:

🐑 Sheep are part of the natural carbon cycle, consuming the organic carbon stored in plants and converting it to wool. Fifty per cent of the weight of wool is pure organic carbon.

🐑 Wool products have long lifespans, meaning they are used or worn longer than other textile fibre products

🐑 Wool textile products tend to be washed less frequently at lower temperatures which has a lower impact on the environment

🐑 Wool is readily recyclable: 6% of the total wool market is recycled, much higher than other fibre types

🐑 Wool biodegrades readily on land and in water – as a protein-based fibre, wool does not contribute to microplastic pollution

Campaign for Wool New Zealand has stepped up to defend strong wool with a media campaign reaching out to New Zealanders via TV, radio, print, digital and social media.

The "Live Naturally, Choose Wool" campaign highlights wool's warmth, moisture-wicking properties and flame resistance.

Speaking for the CFWNZ Trust, business development manager Tom O'Sullivan told Farmer's Weekly that interest in wool alternatives is picking up: "Companies making things out of plastics and synthetics are starting to inquire about whether there is a wool-based product they could use instead."

Today is World Atopic Eczema Day, where patient communities across the globe join forces to raise awareness on the psychosocial burden of children and youth living with Atopic Eczema.

Atopic eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis, AD) is one of the most prevalent skin diseases in the world. It is a non-communicable and chronic skin disease that usually develops during childhood. It affects body and mind of over 230 million people worldwide, whereby approximately 43 million are aged 1-4, which shows the startlingly high incidence in young children.

Often dismissed as “just a skin condition”, it requires instead a full multidisciplinary team to be properly managed, also to tackle stigmatization and its consequences on the most vulnerable.

IWTO supports the efforts to raise awareness about this condition that affects so many people. Research has shown that wearing super fine Merino wool base layer garments can help reduce eczema symptoms and provide a valuable adjunct therapy.
