Today we take a look at wool textile yarns. A wool yarn is made up of wool fibres held together by twist. This process is carried out in both woollen and worsted spinning. Entire books are written about yarns! And the making of them gets very technical. So we only highlight some of the basics here. In a vertical wool operation, a single business takes ownership of the wool for most of the process. It can be from fibre to fabric as in the case of the famous vertical woollen mills of Yorkshire, such as Abraham Moon. Or it can be from farm to fabric, as in the case of South Africa's Gerber & Co. A Gerber & Co’s merino garment is made fully within the same province of RSA. This is actually quite a feat in today's textile environment, where few businesses take ownership from raw wool to retail. Gerber's pipeline begins on the farm. The wool goes to be carded and dyed at a small knitting company in Cape Town. Community weavers are entrusted with the final knitting. The next stage of their business plan is to set up their own washing and carding plant 120km from the farm. Because of this, Gerber can offer an unsurpassable level of transparency: the unique BAA code on each garment tracks its wool back to the specific sheep who grew it. This traceability is incredibly important: most brands cannot offer this level of detail. But if you care about where your clothes come from and who made them, and under what conditions, you'll want to choose to purchase from businesses that can offer traceability. Natural fibres news from DNFI, the Discover Natural Fibers Initiative. Key facts: 🐑 World natural fibre production in 2022 is estimated at 31.6 million tons 🐑 The value of world natural fibre production at the farm level is estimated at US$80 billion 🐑 Wool prices: Wool prices have climbed since reaching a low of US$8.11 in September 2022, though they remain 9% below the level of this time last year. 🐑 Export prices of sisal reached record highs in 2021-22 and are still above long-term averages. 🐑 An estimated 50 million households around the world are involved in natural fibre production. The largest numbers of households are in China, producing cotton and silk, India, producing cotton, jute and coir, and Bangladesh producing jute. 🐑 When seasonal labour is considered, an estimated 200 million people are involved in natural fibre production each year. Wool in ... space? You bet. Wool's flame resistance, the way it inhibits body odour, and a host of other natural characteristics make wool a natural choice for use in space! Merino wool base layers have been used on the International Space Station, and now, NASA is using wool-based air filter technology as part of its Artemis life support system. Bonus: By finding a way to use wool in its technology, wool innovators are able to reduce use of synthetic material. Wool fibre biodegrades naturally, whereas synthetic fibres, at the end of life, end up in landfill for a very long time. And because wool is natural and protein-based, wool fibres do not contribute to microplastic fibre pollution. Let's celebrate some good news ! Wool sales in Australia are set to receive a boost in 2023, according to a media release from IWTO Member Australian Wool Innovation (AWI). The company's network of offices, which represent Australian woolgrowers around the world, have reported positive signs for wool sales across the year: 1. Strong demand from key markets like China, Italy, Japan, and India, as well as growing interest from fashion and outdoor wear brands. 2. A high degree of normalcy has returned to China following the Omicron outbreak, with most textile mills operating at full capacity since early January. 3. In Italy, AWI's partnership with Prada Luna Rossa for the next America's Cup has led to over 15 other brands approaching the company to use wool in more sporting and outdoor wear. 4. Meanwhile, in Japan, the most recent winter campaign yielded a significant 12.9% uplift in sales of the partner's wool category, totaling $26 million in sales. Wool's eco-credentials, particularly its biodegradability, have resonated with Japanese consumers. Check out the slides for more info!
